Northern carnival costume

The clothing of the northern peoples was shaped by their local conditions. More specifically, by the cold. Temperatures in the northern regions remain low almost year-round. Therefore, clothing is typically made from thick, warm fabrics. Furs and animal skins are used for outerwear.

The inhabitants of the north had a remarkable connection with nature, and this directly influenced their clothing and its decoration. Ornamentation reflects the harsh climate of the West Siberian regions. Geometric shapes and plant motifs are most often used. However, it would be wrong to say that ornamentation is purely decorative; it carries meaning. These seemingly simple patterns were used as amulets. And in some regions, they are still believed to have magical properties to this day.

To evoke the northern cold and warmth of the local peoples' souls, the decoration of the northern folk costume also follows tradition. Geometric patterns are created from colorful fabric inserts. Two types of braid are used to decorate the sleeves and hem of the northern costume: vine braid and straight braid. The edges of the sleeves, hem, and collar are decorated with faux fur.

What fabric is the costume made of? How should it be cared for?

The northern folk costume is made from three types of fabric:

Corduroy is a dense, velvety fabric. It stretches well and is resistant to damage. The fabric is durable and pleasant to the touch. Its durability can be maintained with proper care. Suiting fabric, like corduroy, is dense and wear-resistant. It is used for suits and formal wear.

Gabardine has a similar appearance to corduroy. It is made from wool or synthetics. In both cases, it requires careful care. It's often used in sewing stage costumes and stage wear. If dry cleaning isn't possible, wash it at a temperature no higher than 30 degrees Celsius without spinning. Iron with a steamer or iron. When ironing, place an additional layer of fabric underneath the fabric, and use a medium-high temperature.

Despite the fabric's density, it's lightweight enough to be worn while dancing. The fabric and slight nap create the illusion of "heavy" clothing. Whether dancing vigorously or sedately, the costume is suitable for both.
